EMS to Host Heart Month Events During February

To bring attention to February being American Heart Month, Montgomery County EMS will temporarily change their uniform shirts to red for the entire month.

February 1, 2013 marks the 10th year of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement. “While the progress has been significant, there is still a long way to go. Here is why:

  • Heart disease is still the number 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year.
  • Heart disease kills more women than men, at an average rate of one death per minute.
  • Heart disease kills more women than all kinds of cancer combined.

Here in Montgomery County, we want to better educate our community on the prevention and early detection of heart disease – helping save lives and improving the overall health of our community,” states EMS director Jimmie Edwards. He continues, “We encourage men and women alike to join us in our efforts by attending our events or simply by wearing red.”

Upcoming events include:

  • A Community Education and Blood Pressure event at Emmanuel Family Life Center, 303 Fairview Lane, on Friday, February 1 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This event is hosted by Montgomery County EMS and Vanderbilt Heart and is free and open to the public.
  • National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 1, urges participation by wearing red to increase awareness on heart disease in women.
  • A Community Education Event hosted by Montgomery County EMS on Saturday, February 2 in the center court of Governor’s Square Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event will feature risk factors of heart disease, CPR education, signs and symptoms of a heart attack, healthy living information and what you can do to join in the fight against heart disease.
