AEDs Donated to Sheriff's Office

Montgomery County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) recently presented the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office with 10 (ten) Automated External Defibrillators or AED units for use in on-duty patrol cars. The AEDs were obtained through a Community Health Foundation grant received by EMS for the purchase of the new units.

EMS director Jimmie Edwards explains, "The addition of AED units in rural districts will shorten the period of time before life saving measures can begin during a cardiac event. If a patrol car is the first on scene or closest to a call they can arrive and immediately begin use of the AED on the cardiac patient."

Sheriff John Fuson adds, "Life safety is the most important aspect of any incident andthis will allow all on-duty patrol units to be equipped with an AED for immediate response in the field." Edwards continues, "This is another step forward to having an optimal system for public health. All Sheriff's Office staff is CPR trained and will receive updated training on the new AEDs this week.

Mayor Carolyn Bowers states, "We greatly appreciate the grant from the Community Health Foundation. It allows us a continued focus on improving public safety. The addition of the AED units and the upcoming Community CPR event in September are both great avenues to improve cardiac event outcomes for our citizens. The faster a patient receives medical attention, the greater their chance of apositive outcome."

The public is invited to the Community CPR Class on Saturday, September 13 hosted by EMS and the Austin Peay State University Nursing Program. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the Red Barn on Austin Peay campus and will conclude at noon. The class is free and open to the public. Attendees will learn:

  • Adult, child and infant CPR
  • Adult, child and infant choking relief techniques
  • Use of AED machines
